His claim that Magic Realism is not "the creation of imaginary beings or worlds but the discovery of the mysterious relationship between man and his circumstances" coincides with Carpentier's material definition of Magic Realism as being a confrontation with a specific sociohistorical reality rather than an escape. Wanting to re-create a family of his own, Moojie undergoes life-changing trials, trials complicated by the girl he falls for, a bully-magician, the cantankerous, war-hero Pappy, and the meddlesome, Irish Auntie Tilda.

Allen’s characters have such life breathed into them it’s as though I’ve known them all my life. In any event, clearly I'm in the minority with this one, so it might not be a good idea to use my definition I guess. This antinomy is an important aspect of magical realism, and deliberative testimonio allows for, and even asks readers to analyze, these polarities.
