He is generally thought of as a writer of ghost stories, but his short fiction explored a number of other supernatural themes as well, and a sizeable portion of his work draws its conflict from psychological rather than supernatural sources. The Silver Skull (1979) takes place a century later. Ravenmoon (1988) is a very impressive work that blends traditional fantasy and horror, mixing themes and moods in a historical setting. Language and translation have featured quite a bit in my writing.

A reasonably effective film version appeared in 1983 based on Bradbury’s own screenplay. In Boundaries (1990), the protagonist is robbed of closure when the murderer of his sister commits suicide. Consequently, he is unusually vulnerable to kidnapping. He eventually rejoins the other half of the party, who are convinced that he suffered from illusions caused by stress. This time a distraught family adopts a boy to replace their own after he dies, but the newcomer is not what he seems to be.

HOWARD wrote in a number of different genres, including a respectable body of horror fiction, of which “The Cairn on the Headland” is one of the best examples. But even though he can see the shoreline, where he would be safe, there is no way he can reach it, and the story ends with him finally surrendering to the creature. “The Raft” became Robert Rankin’s unique style of humor moves freely, almost chaotically, from science fiction to fantasy to supernatural, so that labeling his fiction as one or the other is sometimes futile.

Two of his collections contain primarily fantasy stories, Hearts of Wood and Other Timeless Tales (1986) and The Hot Jazz Trio (1989). Even though the stories are intended for a younger audience, adult readers can also enjoy them. He reconsiders in The Devil’s Bargain (2002), responding to the depredations of an evil sorcerer. Determined to change their luck, the party splits in two and moves to fresher territory. Walpole’s imitators, particularly Anne Radcliffe, produced much more coherent and entertaining tales along similar lines, but their debt to Walpole is clear.

For most of them it is a necessity rather than a sport, and the need to conceal their existence limits their predation.
